Kris Hopkins, the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Keighley and Ilkley, has paid warm tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh after Buckingham Palace announced that he would be standing down from public engagements at the end of the summer.
Mr Hopkins said:
“I was privileged to have had the opportunity to meet His Royal Highness on many occasions during my period serving as Vice Chamberlain of Her Majesty’s Royal Household.
“He always made me feel at ease whilst I went about my duties and often had a witty comment to share.
“The Duke of Edinburgh has provided remarkable support to The Queen throughout the more than six decades she has reigned as our Monarch.
“Before that, he had an illustrious career in the Royal Navy and served our nation with valour in the Second World War.
“I am pleased that he has taken this decision to step back whilst still in good health and I have no doubt that he will continue to play the key role in supporting Her Majesty, albeit away from public view.
“I wish him well.”
