Delivering job opportunities

I'm working hard to deliver jobs and apprenticeship schemes in our area; helping people get the skills they need to succeed. Although both youth unemployment and general unemployment in the Keighley area is falling and is lower than when I was elected to Parliament, that’s no consolation to those who are seeking work.

I recognise that it can be difficult to find a job if you don’t know what opportunities are out there, or if you haven’t been in work for some time.

I welcomed news that the unemployment total in Keighley and Ilkley fell by 10 last month to 990 according to the Office for National Statistics.

This represents a reduction of 240 compared to this time last year and a drop of 1,021 – or 51% - since June 2010.

Youth unemployment fell to 180 in Keighley and Ilkley last month, 115 fewer than 12 months ago.

In the United Kingdom as a whole, the number of people out of work dropped by 54,000 to 1.65 million in the three months to May.  At 4.9%, this represents the lowest national unemployment rate since July 2005.

I am obviously pleased that another 10 of my constituents are now in jobs and hope this trend will continue in the months ahead, despite the initial jolt to our economy caused by the Brexit vote.

It is particularly noteworthy that unemployment has fallen by more than half in the six years since the Conservative-led Government came to power.  This reflects incredibly positively on the sound economic policies we have put in place, which have given local employers in Keighley and Ilkley the necessary business confidence to take on more staff.

It is also worth pointing out that wages rose 2.2 per cent in the last year and, with inflation still very low and almost 750,000 jobs now vacant across the country, there has never been a better time to be in work.”

I am delighted that following the success of my two Job Fairs in 2015 and 2016, I will be holding my third fair in March 2017.
